OUR DAD
Our dad, Vincent Yanelli, has been a role model to us in so many ways. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, in 1987, when we were just little kids. Although the disease has rendered him to the confinement of a wheelchair, it has never broken his spirit and love of life. Imagine how devastating it would be to be diagnosed with a disabling disease at the young age of 37 while having two young children and a new home; some people might think of this as their worst nightmare. Well, our dad, did not let Multiple Sclerosis stop him. We still went on family vacations and just pushed our dad around in a wheelchair. There were even some perks. For example, when we went to amusement parks with my dad, we were able to go on the rides two times in a row and always were able to move to the head of the line. About 9 years ago our dad was restricted to a wheelchair permanently but continued to work full time to support our family. He used hand controls to drive and would leave for work more than an hour earlier than most due to the amount of time it took to get in and out of his car. Four years ago, he lost use of one of his arms which forced him to stop working. You would think that this would make a person lose faith, but somehow our Dad has continued to be positive about his situation and truly does make the best of things. Several of our friends have volunteered to run the Long Island Half Marathon on Sunday May 3rd. They are running to help raise money for much needed medical equipment for my dad and, most importantly, in support of all people who have been disabled by Multiple Sclerosis. 100% of the money donated will go directly to purchasing medical equipment that insurance companies will not cover. Our dad has always been a shoulder to lean on and a source of strength to his many friends and the members of his Multiple Sclerosis support group. We are so happy that he will be able to see how much his positivity means to others.
